One of Congressman Anthony Weiner’s Side Chicks Runs to Gloria Allred. Why Do Strippers and Porn Stars Love Gloria Allred?
June 15, 2011 No CommentsI know what you’re probably thinking as you peruse the above picture of yet another sensationalized Gloria Allred press conference: Why does every woman with a hot body and a shady past run to pitbull attorney Gloria Allred at the first whiff of a scandal?
I sat down for a face-to-face interview with Gloria Allred last year at a hotel in New York, and I questioned her at great length about her life and her legal career. Allred confided a great deal to me about her upbringing, a sexual assault perpetrated against her at a young age, single motherhood, and her fight for justice for the less powerful, less wealthy, and un-famous. I learned quite a bit from our discussion and I grew to appreciate Gloria Allred’s purpose and her work. But even I am a bit befuttled by her uncanny ability to weave herself seamlessly into so many celebrity and political cheating and sex scandals.
“Former” porn star Ginger Lee is allegedley one of the six women that Congressman Anthony Weiner was sexting (you’ve gotta love this new century we’re living in) via Twitter, text messages, and who knows what else. According to Gloria Allred client and alleged Congressman Weiner virtual mistress, Ginger Lee, Weiner asked Ginger Lee to lie to the press about the nature of their communication.
Allegedly Weiner’s public relations advice to Ginger Lee was as follows, “The key is to have a short, thought out statement that tackles the top line questions, and then refer people back to it.” Congressman Weiner also allegedly went on to provide Ginger Lee examples of canned responses that she could give to the media, offering that she should say somethnig along the lines of, “This is silly. Like so many others, I follow Rep. Weiner on Twitter.”
But unlike so many “others,” Rep. Weiner doesn’t generally speak about his “package,” with the grand majority of his Twitter followers. According to Ginger Lee, Anthony Weiner attempted to seduce her with the cheesiest flirty banter I think I have ever read, like, “I have wardrobe demands too. I need to highlight my package,” and, “Alright, my package and I are not going to beg.”
Attorney Gloria Allred scheduled a press conference on Wednesday, June 15th where Ginger Lee made these alleged allegations against Congressman Anthony Weiner in the name of supposedly clearing her own name. But could there also be a payday for Ginger Lee? Was this Gloria Allred press conference about telling the media the truth or shaking down Weiner? It’s a toss up.
To learn more about Gloria Allred and why she does what she does, here are some excerpts from my Janaury 2010 interview with Allred, who was at the time representing Tiger Woods’s alleged mistress, and recent Celebrity Rehab alum, Rachel Uchitel:
PR.com: Do you believe that someone who is wealthy and powerful can be victimized by someone who is not?
Gloria Allred: Yes. We have represented some celebrities, but generally we are representing non-celebrities against celebrities. Celebrities often will say that they are being victimized by the individuals who are suing them, and they come up with the standard, boring and unimaginative script-line that there is some kind of economic motive or criminal act that is being perpetrated on them.
PR.com: You don’t sound convinced.
Gloria Allred: It’s often not the case. Often they have hurt the non-celebrity and they have hurt them in a variety of ways. They are just rationalizing or engaging in spin to protect their own celebrity image rather than admitting, and taking responsibility for the wrong that they have inflicted on one of their employees, or someone with whom they’ve had an intimate relationship, or someone else in their life. So rather than acknowledging their personal responsibility and compensating the person whom they have harmed they will rationalize and try to make themselves the victim. It’s probably not something they are going to be able to defend in a court of law. But for the purposes of the court of public opinion they and their entourage will put that out in the public airwaves to try to sustain and maintain their own reputation.
PR.com: Do you think that power and celebrity corrupt one’s character?
Gloria Allred: I’m really not dealing with their character. I’m dealing with their PR image that they’re trying to spin to their advantage. I understand why they do that, but sometimes that’s going to bite them in the neck later on because they are unable to defend their actions in a court of law. They often have a bunch of “yes” people around them who are willing to do whatever the celebrity wants. Often, in the end, those same people end up getting fired, and sometimes those same people come to me to represent them against the celebrity (laughs). There have been many such cases. I know where all of the skeletons are buried in Southern California.
PR.com: Wouldn’t holding a press conference be trying a case in the court of public opinion?
Gloria Allred: We don’t ordinarily just do a press conference. We are doing something in addition to a press conference. We are doing a lawsuit and asserting a claim in some manner.
PR.com: That much I understand, but why in certain cases, in addition to trying a case in a court of law, also hold a press conference and put it out there in the media?
Gloria Allred: Filing a lawsuit is a public record open to anyone who wishes to view it. So if we are also doing a news conference in addition to the filing of a lawsuit, we are helping to put into context, and give a frame of reference to the lawsuit that is already on file and will be viewed by the public, and may be written about and discussed.
