Public Relations & Media Tip, Be Well Versed in World Events
December 14, 2009 No CommentsAs someone who holds the advantage of being both a publicist as well as a journalist i can say that when it comes to public relations tips and tricks of the trade, the best thing you can do when embarking upon a media tour of any kind is to catch up on your Washington Post, New York Times, CNN, Google News, you name it.
There is nothing worse than a person who cannot hold their own in a conversation about world events. If the only topic you can speak on with any semblence of knowledge is your own profession you will come across as sheltered, self centered and unsophisticated, perhaps even a bit shallow. Before doing any sort of media interview my best advice is to have a peak at the latest headlines in the news and have an opinion on them. have a position. You don’t have to take a hard controversial line on a topic if that is not your personality and you find it uncomfortable, but perhaps express your opinion from a human standpoint, as an example, express empathy for someone or something in the news in such a way that you display that you are informed about the situation.
Public Relations and media exposure is not just about selling your product or service. You are selling yourself and that being said, you want people to walk away from reading about you or listening to you speak thinking, “What an interesting person.” That is the ultimate goal and it Will translate into more commercial success.
