Tracy Morgan: I’m Sorry For Insulting Gay People. Do You Believe Me?

June 21, 2011 No Comments

Tracy Morgan is on a campaign to convince the entertainment industry, homosexuals, and the general public that he is sorry for his remarks about gay people. But, do you believe him? And should he even be apologizing for the way that he, quite obviously, really feels? Do you think Tracy Morgan sees the error of his ways, or is his apology a contrived public relations mea culpa to attempt to do damage control for his career?

After a not-so-funny stand up routine in which Tracy Morgan said, “if his son was gay he better come home and talk to him like a man and not [he mimicked a gay, high pitched voice], or he would pull out a knife and stab that little N***** to death,” Tracy then said he “didn’t [expletive] care if he [angered] some gays.” It seems to me that he probably angered gays, African Americans, and humanity in general, and what on earth led Tracy Morgan to believe that this “comedic” material was the least bit funny? He really knows how to clear a room, with one disgusted audience member commenting, “It was the worst thing I’ve ever heard… so not funny.”

Look, we all say stupid things at times, and we all joke around and have crass, raunchy and sometimes flat out offensive conversations behind closed doors, and with our own closest friends who know when we are clearly joking and when we are serious. I think one problem that many celebrities have is that they don’t seem to understand that you can’t talk the way you do with your friends, in private, in a public arena. But what makes Tracy Morgan’s comments particularly disturbing is that it doesn’t seem that he was kidding around. He seemed serious in his conviction against homosexuality, and in Hollywood, that’s a problem.

Personally, I would never say the things that Tracy Morgan said about gay people, since it is not part of my makeup to even think along those lines. Tracy Morgan then doubled down by saying “women are a gift from God,” and that “‘Born this Way’ is bulls-it, gay is a choice,” and, “‘God don’t make no mistakes.’”

Point being, obviously this is Tracy Morgan’s opinion on the issue of homosexuality. This is America, and he is entitled to his opinion, so why is he now apologizing? I love Tracy Morgan, he is great on 30 Rock and I continue to be a fan of the show, but I find his “apology” almost more offensive than his original comments, since it is clearly disingenuous.

Here is Tracy Morgan’s officially released apology:

“I want to apologize to my fans and the gay & lesbian community for my choice of words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville. I’m not a hateful person and don’t condone any kind of violence against others. While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context.”

Do you believe him?
