Vanilla Ice Thinks Justin Bieber Fame Won’t Last “[He'll Have To] Put All the Pieces Back Together”
July 25, 2011 No CommentsOne-time rap star, Vanilla Ice (real name Rob Van Winkle), is adament that current teen singing sensation, Justin Bieber’s, uberfame will be a passing fad, just like his was, and that the teen idol is sure to suffer the same fate that befell Vanilla Ice’s rapping career.
In a recent comment to the UK’s Daily Mail, Vanilla Ice reflected on his early 1990s sensational fame claiming that he can relate to what Justin Bieber is experiencing. Ice told the UK’s Daily Mail, “I mean, I did ‘Ice Ice Baby’ when I was 16. So I can kind of relate a bit. Sold over a hundred million records. And I had a weekend that lasted about three years, and I didn’t know who I was, what’s my purpose in life.”
Vanilla Ice then went on to draw similarities between his “Ice Ice Baby” hitmaking days and Bieber Fever, commenting, “… my prediction about [Justin] Bieber is that he’s going to go through one of those weekends that lasts a few years because he’s had such success as a child act. Then something else new will come along and he’ll be forgotten, and he can try to put all the pieces back together, so it’s going to be entertaining to watch.”
Do you detect a hint of jealousy and sneering, or is it just me? While it’s true that the majority of teen idols do experience an unkind fate, there are a rare few who manage to transition into adult fame with solid ongoing music or acting careers. I would think that someone like Vanilla Ice would empathize with what Justin Bieber is experiencing and would actually be rooting for the very young star. Instead, Ice’s comments read more like he is actually rooting for Justin Bieber to eventually fail, since we all know that misery loves company.
Vanilla Ice, who’s marriage recently imploded, has attempted over the years to launch several musical comebacks, trying on various musical genres and images for size, with little recent success. But, you know what, the upside is that the guy did reportedly sell 100 million albums. How many recording artists can make that claim? That’s a pretty incredible accomplishment, and although it didn’t last, Vanilla Ice’s meteoric rise to fame and his signature hit, “Ice Ice Baby” will go down in music history.
And if that’s not enough, the guy did get to sleep with Madonna. Buck up Ice, worry about your own life and don’t take shots at the Biebs.
