Giuliana Rancic Announces That She Has Breast Cancer

This morning on NBC’s The Today Show, E! News anchor and television personality, Giuliana Rancic made a shocking announcement, telling Ann Curry that she has been diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

Rancic and husband, Bill, have extensively documented their struggle to have a baby on their Style Network show, Giuliana & Bill, and Giuliana has admitted to undergoing countless rounds of fertility treatment, including in-vitro (IVF) fertilization. The couple even discussed the possibility of adoption.

This morning on The Today Show, Giuliana Rancic revealed that a recent mammogram revealed that she is in the early stages of Breast Cancer, and the E! News star is extremely thankful that she took her doctor’s advice to get a mammogram even though she is “only 36.”

Giuliana told Ann Curry, “It was just a kick in the stomach. That was the hardest day … [the emotions are] what you expect, but so much more. It was incredible instant sobbing, and it was like the world just crashed down around me. I couldn’t believe it, 36 years old, no family history.”

When I interviewed Giuliana and Bill a few months back they had just come out of a rough couple of years, trying desperately to conceive and having no luck. Bill told me that they were putting imminent baby plans on hold to embark on what they were calling their “year of fun” which included extensive travel, new business ventures and embracing the success of their show on the Style Network.

Now Giuliana and Bill Rancic have been thrown yet another curve ball, but this married couple is rock solid! They will get through Giuliana’s Breast Cancer diagnosis together.

According to NBC, “Rancic told Curry, while this was her third try at IVF, it was the first time a doctor had insisted on a mammogram.” And it turns out Rancic’s doctor’s instincts were spot on!

As Giuliana Rancic told Ann Curry on The Today Show, “[My doctor] said, ‘I don’t care if you’re 26 or 36, but I will not get you pregnant if possibly there’s a small risk that you have cancer because the hormones will accelerate the cancer. I never in my wildest dreams expected anything would be wrong.”

It sounds like Giuliana caught the cancer extremely early when the condition is very treatable with a good prognosis. Here’s hoping that Giuliana will be well very soon.

Giuliana had this to say about the shocking diagnosis of Breast Cancer that she just received:

“A lot of us think we’re invincible … but we have to start putting ourselves on the to-do list. I had a friend call me yesterday, and she said, ‘I’m so sorry, can I do anything for you?’ And I said, ‘Just call your doctor tomorrow and make an appointment. That’s what you could do for me.’ … I will be okay because I found it early.”
