Public Relations 101 – Be Polite and Gracious.
September 22, 2009 35 CommentsOk, so here is the simplist and one of the most effective things you can do to up your public relations factor in any walk of life or any industry, be polite and treat others as you wish for others to treat you. Over the years and in my dealings with editors, reporters, producers, clients, colleagues, other PR people etc… I cannot tell you how many times people “forget” to say please, thank you, or even to be where they are supposed to be when they are supposed to be there.
An appointment should never be missed without an apologetic phone call or email. An email should always be graciously returned even if to decline an offer or opportunity. Please and thank you should be public relations and human communication staples. Maintaining professionalism in presenting yourself to the public isn’t just about being good at your job. It is also about being kind, polite and considerate of other peoples’ time and resources.
In the public relations field, in my journalism work and in the world, I always take an extra 2 minutes here and an extra two minutes there to return emails from colleagues, return phone calls, say please and thank you and to communicate where I will be and when, or if I cannot make it to something.
I counsel my clients to appreciate every opportunity that comes there way and to respect the person providing them with that opportunity. It works wonder for their public relations campaign and for the reputation of their company or organization.
